<p><strong>I started my first business at 18 with a pickup truck and a plan I wrote in high school. </strong>I built it from nothing, hired 50 people, and put their health insurance ahead of buying new equipment. I served on the Southington Town Council for the same reason I'm running now: to fight for the people I live next to.</p><p>Your electric bill keeps climbing while Eversource posts record profits. Groceries cost more every week. Hartford hasn't delivered, no matter which party's in charge. <p>At the second highest rates of any state in the nation, it's clear that Connecticut has an energy problem. While the national average sits at 17.5 cents per kWh, Connecticut families are drowning at 28 cents per kWh. Eversource has complete control over the energy industry in many parts of the state, and we're suffering financially as a result. As your state senator, I will fight to change this system.</p><p>Connecticut needs publicly-owned power grids. Seven towns (Bozrah, Norwich, Groton, Wallingford, Jewett City, and Norwalk) already have them, and the results show clear success with far lower rates than anywhere else in the state. These are nonprofit operations with a goal in mind to serve their residents, not shareholders. Competition in the free market <em>can </em>encourage low prices- but not when just one or two giant corporations have control over the entire market. Eversource is gouging Connecticut families of their money, and it's time we put an end to it.</p><p>I want the voters of the 16th District to know where I stand on this pressing issue. <p>Connecticut families already pay some of the highest electricity rates in the country. Buried in those bills is a “public benefits” charge that subsidizes the Millstone nuclear plant — even though Connecticut produces more electricity than we use. That extra power is sent to other states, but we are the ones paying part of the bill.</p><p>Our state is already doing its part by hosting this facility. We should not also be subsidizing energy that primarily benefits others. At a time when housing, groceries, and medical bills are stretching budgets, every extra charge matters. I will work to end this unfair arrangement and make sure Connecticut ratepayers only pay for the energy and infrastructure that serve our communities.</p>

<h2>Ending Unfair Energy Subsidies</h2>

<p>Child care is not a luxury — it’s a necessity for working families. But right now, the cost of care can equal a second rent or mortgage payment. For some parents, especially mothers, the price tag forces them out of the workforce entirely, which hurts family income and the broader economy. When families can’t find affordable, high-quality care, children miss out on early learning opportunities, parents are stretched thin, and employers lose workers.</p><p>We need a national commitment to affordable child care, starting with investments that expand access, improve quality, and support the workforce that makes it possible. That means better pay and training for child care providers, subsidies that bring costs down for families, and expanded pre-K programs so every child starts school ready to learn. No parent should have to choose between their paycheck and their child’s well-being.</p>

<p>The United States should lead the world in delivering the next generation of medical breakthroughs. From mRNA vaccines to treatments like semiglutide and tirzepatide, science can save lives and improve health for millions. Too often, progress is blocked by corporate interests that put profits over patients and by the current administration's political appointees who put their agendas above science.</p><p>Even when breakthroughs happen, drug companies set prices so high that working families, seniors, and people on fixed incomes cannot afford them. I will fight to cap prices, allow Medicare to negotiate costs, break monopolies, and ensure our regulatory system serves patients, not corporate bottom lines.</p><p>Innovation should save lives and be available to everyone.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.southingtonoutsider.org/post/perry-announces-run-for-state-senate">Perry Announces Run for State Senate</a></p><p>Nearly two months after <a href="https://www.southingtonoutsider.org/post/perry-ends-1st-district-congressional-primary-challenge" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><u>ending</u></a> his Democratic primary challenge for the seat held by Congressman John Larson, former Town Councilor Jack Perry has announced that he will be running to represent the 16<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;District in Connecticut’s State Senate. This race will pit him against the incumbent Senator, Republican Rob Sampson.</p><p></p><p>This will not be the first time Perry and Sampson have competed for votes in the district. Back in 2020, Perry, then running as an independent with an endorsement from the Working Families Party, lost to Sampson with 46.2% of the vote, versus Sampson’s 53.8%.</p><p></p><p>Connecticut’s state senate races are held every two years. Democrat Chris Robertson unsuccessfully challenged Sampson in 2022, getting 41.4% of the vote to Sampson’s 58.6%, and again in 2024, when he lost 43.4% to 56.6%.</p><p></p><p>Perry, who is 36, served as a member of Southington’s Town Council from 2021 to 2025 and has been active in community service. He is the founder of a trash hauling business, HQ Dumpsters, that was sold to Plainville-based hauler CWPM in 2024; Perry currently serves as operations manager for that firm. His campaign <a href="https://www.voteforjackperry.com/issues" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><u>webpage</u></a> highlights several issues; among the top three are improving the economy for the working class, providing people with access to better healthcare, and supporting small businesses.</p><p></p><p>Perry says that he is optimistic about his chances this time around, given the success that Democratic candidates had in Connecticut last fall. Across the state, 25 towns switched from Democratic to Republican control, while only one switched to Republican. Democrats in Southington regained control of the Board of Education and managed a tie on the Board of Finance. At the level of Town Council, Republicans bucked the statewide trend, holding on to a 6-3 majority.</p><p></p><p>The 16th Senate district includes Prospect, Southington, and Wolcott, where Sampson lives, as well as parts of Cheshire and Waterbury.</p><p></p><p>Sampson, who is 56, kicked off his own re-election campaign on January 12. He has been part of state government since 2010, when he was first elected to the House of Representatives. Sampson has built up a devoted following across Connecticut, and to some extent nationally, by cultivating a reputation as a small-government conservative. The issues page on his <a href="https://sampsonforct.com/wp/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><u>website</u></a> gives pride of place to his advocacy of low taxes and limited government spending, Second Amendment rights, and lower energy costs. He currently sits on the Government Administration and Elections Committee, the Government Oversight Committee, the Housing Committee, and the Labor and Public Employees Committee.</p>

That means fewer reporters holding local leaders accountable and less information for people who need it most.</p><p>I will work to restore public media funding, create federal grants to support local newsrooms, and offer tax incentives that help independent and community-based outlets survive. I will also push to protect press freedom, expand access to public records, and stop corporate consolidation that wipes out local coverage. Every community deserves a strong, independent local press that tells the stories that matter most.</p>
